A Resolution Supporting the United States Government in its Actions with Iraq and Fighting Terrorism WHEREAS It has been Shown that Iraq is considerable threat to the United States and; WHEREAS the House and Senate passed and sent to the White House a resolution authorizing the president to use military force, if necessary, to compel Iraq to eliminate its biological and chemical weapons and disband its nuclear weapons program and; WHEREAS Iraq has been responsible for the deprivation of its peopleās basic human rights including the Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life, Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Arbitrary Arrest, Detention, or Exile, Denial of Fair Public Trial, Arbitrary Interference With Privacy, Use of Excessive Force and Violations of Humanitarian Law In Internal Conflicts as found from the United States State department Report Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor March 4, 2002 and; WHEREAS Iraq has prohibited the establishment of independent human rights organizations and persistently refused to grant visits to human rights monitors and; WHEREAS The Iraqi government neglects the health and nutritional needs of children, discriminates against religious minorities and ethnic groups, severely restricts trade union rights and; WHEREAS: Child labor persists, and there are instances of forced labor and; WHEREAS there has been a disregard for Respect for basic Civil Liberties, in Iraq Including: Freedom of Speech and Press, Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association, Freedom of Religion. Freedom of Movement Within the Country, Foreign Travel, Emigration, and Repatriation and; WHEREAS The Citizens of Iraq do not have the right to change their government. The President wields power over all instruments of government and; WHEREAS the students of the University of Washington put their trust in the United States and our government and; WHEREAS we as human beings have the duty and the capability to prevent the loss of one more innocent life; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT the students of the University of Washington formally support the United States government leaders and military in its actions abroad in dealing with Iraq and terrorism, provided all efforts are made to limit innocent casualties, and to provide relief civilians and refugees.
