A Resolution Advocating for the creation of Resources for Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgender Students, Staff and Faculty

WHEREAS, in June 1999 then President McCormick appointed a Task Force on Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender Issues;

WHEREAS, in February 2001 that task force issued its final report ãAffirming Diversity; Moving from Tolerance to Acceptance and Beyond;

WHEREAS, that report outlined ten recommendations to the Office of the President, with one being the creation of a staffed resource office;

WHEREAS, the University of Washington does not currently have any administrative level resources for Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender students, staff or faculty;

WHEREAS, eight of ten of the Pac-10 University have administrative represtation and most of Washingtonâs peer institutions have such resources available to LGBT students;

WHEREAS, the University of Washington has included LGBT people in their definition of diversity, as well as included them in the ASUW commission structure, thus demonstrating the need and value of including LGBT people in the universities resource structure in an attempt to increase diversity;

WHEREAS, LGBT people cannot access the Office of Minority Affairs for much needed resources;

WHEREAS, the existence of these resources provides visibility for underrepresented groups which affirms their place on campus;

WHEREAS, the GBLTC is unable to offer the kind of resources required by GBLT students;

WHEREAS, it is a proven fact that LGBT students are in need of resources that will help them best achieve at the University of Washington;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, a half staff position be either allocated from the Office of Minority Affairs or created through the Office Student Affairs to work towards the addressing the needs of LGBT students and to work towards the creation of a LGBT resource center;

THAT, this recommendation be sent to both the Office of Student Affairs, Office of the President, and the Office of Minority Affairs;

THAT, the ASUW continues to support LGBT undergrads and their allies in working with the administration to create a staff position and work to educate the campus community of its necessity.
