A Resolution in Support of the State of Israel WHEREAS The State of Israel provides a sanctuary for the Jewish people in itās historic and geographic homeland, and WHEREAS The Jewish people, also called the People Israel and the Nation of Israel in historical contexts, have played significant roles throughout human history, and WHEREAS The Jewish people, like all peoples who claim a homeland, deserve such a homeland so they may live in peace and self-determination, and WHEREAS The State of Israel incorporates most of the historic and geographic homeland of the Jewish people, and WHEREAS Historical precedents have displayed a clear and present danger to the well-being and existence of the Jewish people, and WHEREAS The State of Israel provides the Jewish people, the Nation of Israel, a voice among the other nations of the world, and WHEREAS The State of Israel and itās inhabitants have struggled for peace in the many years before its foundation and throughout its almost 55 year history, and WHEREAS the State of Israel and the University of Washington share common commitments to democracy and pluralism, the incorporation and mutual respect of many different viewpoints, and WHEREAS the State of Israel and the University of Washington share common commitments to cutting edge medical sciences such as heart transplant and breast cancer research, and the human exploration of space, tragically exemplified by the loss of UW Alumnus Michael Anderson and Israeli Air Force Colonel Ilan Ramon in the STS Columbia, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT the Associated Students of the University of Washington stand with Israel in its quest for peace.
