A Bill To Change the Timing of Elections WHEREAS the proper functioning of the Senate requires officers dedicated to their elected positions, and; WHEREAS having officers attain office to later leave because the no longer feel committed to Senate is detrimental to the continued health of the Senate, and; WHEREAS the present system of holding Senate elections after general ASUW elections perpetuates the belief that Senate is an afterthought for candidates, and; WHEREAS holding Senate elections before general ASUW elections ensures that candidates seeking a Senate position are firm in their commitment to the Senate, and; WHEREAS should there be a lack of suitable candidates before the general ASUW elections, the election could be postponed to allow for more candidates to seek that office. BE IT RECOMMENDED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON STUDENT SENATE: THAT the following be added as Article V, Section 5, C to the Student Senate Bylaws: Annual elections for the position of Chair, Vice Chair, Membership Coordinator, and Secretary shall be held one week prior to the general ASUW elections through the use of closed ballot to not occur during a meeting of the Senate. Should the nomination phase fail to produce a minimum of two candidates for a particular position, that position's election will be postponed for two weeks. THAT Article V, Section 1, A of the Student Senate Bylaws be stricken and Article V, Section 1, B of the Student Senate Bylaws be renumbered to Article V, Section 1, A, and; THAT these changes should not come into effect until the completion of the elections for the current Senate session.
