Supporting Instruction of American Sign Language at the University of Washington

WHEREAS, American Sign Language (ASL) is considered a foreign language by the University of Washington administration, and;

WHEREAS, ASL is a relevant field of study for many departments and majors, including: speech and hearing sciences, linguistics, anthropology, and sociology, and;

WHEREAS, ASL is not currently offered at the University of Washington, and;

WHEREAS, ASL is the third most used foreign language in the United States, and;

WHEREAS, ASL and Deaf persons represent a diverse and significant culture in the United States and at this University, and;

WHEREAS, in order to study ASL, students would have to enroll in classes in area community colleges.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, the University of Washington should offer courses in ASL, and;

THAT, the Disabled Student Committee work with the Administration to develop courses in ASL consistent with this Resolution, and;

THAT, the Disabled Student Committee report to the Senate Committee on Faculty / Administrative Issues quarterly on the progress of forming ASL courses on campus.
