A Resolution to Support Transgender Rights WHEREAS the current non-discrimination policy reads ăThe University of Washington, as an institution established and maintained by the people of the State, is committed as a matter of principle to providing equality of opportunity to all members of the University community. In conformance with Federal and State law, the University shall not discriminate against any person because of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam era veteran. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is also a violation of this policy. WHEREAS the current policy extends to sex and sexual discrimination; Discrimination on the basis of 'sex' includes sexual harassment, which means: (1) unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors by a person who has authority over the recipient when (a) submission to such conduct is made either an implicit or explicit condition of the individual's employment, academic status, or ability to use University facilities and services, or (b) submission to or rejection of the conduct is used as the basis for a decision that affects tangible aspects of the individual's employment, academic status, or use of University facilities; or (2) unwelcome and unsolicited language or conduct by a member of the University community that is of a sexual nature or is based on the recipient's sex and that is sufficiently offensive or pervasive that it could reasonably be expected to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive University environment which also does not include transgender people. WHEREAS the current anti-discrimination policy of the University of Washington does not extend protection to transgender students, staff or faculty because transgender people are not either a sexual orientation or covered under the term sex. WHEREAS all students should have the security to have protection to their jobs, studies and lives transgender students do not have these protections. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT the language of the non-discrimination policy should be changed to include gender expression, gender and gender identity. THAT the policy read ăThe University of Washington, as an institution established and maintained by the people of the State, is committed as a matter of principle to providing equality of opportunity to all members of the University community. In conformance with Federal and State law, the University shall not discriminate against any person because of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, age, marital status, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam era veteran.
