A Resolution in Support of an Emergency Response System WHEREAS, the tragedy that occurred on September 11th of 2001 has increased awareness of extenuating circumstances and disasters that could potentially endanger the lives of the University of Washington student body, and; WHEREAS, thousands of students were asked to return to class minutes after the earthquake occurred in the spring of 2001, before all of the buildings were checked for structural damages, and; WHEREAS, the official cancellation of class is at the discretion of the President of the University of Washington and dependent upon his good judgment, and; WHEREAS, technology does not yet allow for the administration to simultaneously contact every professor or teachers assistant with the immediacy that is required to guarantee the well-being of the students on campus during a natural or man-made disaster, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT, a formal earthquake or natural disaster policy should be enacted that requires that all of the buildings on campus be checked for structural damages before classes resume, and; THAT, an emergency response policy should be enacted in preparation for any national disaster, terrorist attack, or other extenuating circumstance that compromises the safety of the student body, and; THAT, the University provide a phone hotline which students my call to obtain information about school closures.
