A Resolution Supporting the Protection of Squirrels on the UW Campus

Whereas, the squirrel is a friend of the students of the University of Washington, and

Whereas, any one squirrel is created equal to any other squirrel on the UW campus, and

Whereas, the squirrels participate in an active role in the students lives throughout the year, and

Whereas, they nest in hollow or fallen trees, and also make leaf (drey) nests, and

Whereas, the life span of squirrels are 7 - 8 years in the wild, and

Whereas, the squirrels natural food supply is a diet of pine cones, acorns and other nuts, some fungi, berries and occasionally insects on campus, and

Whereas, squirrels have shown little to no violence or discontent towards students, and

Whereas, the squirrels are non-territorial, and

Whereas, the squirrels survival is coherent with humans action in the University environment, and

Whereas, the squirrel population is subject to deterrence with the construction of new buildings,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

That: the ASUW do formally support inter-animal cooperation of the squirrel population with students, and

That: the ASUW do formally oppose any life threatening danger posed upon any squirrel on the UW campus, and

That: the ASUW do formally oppose any destruction of squirrel habitat, drey, or food supply in the locations where squirrels are abundant on the UW campus.
