A Resolution Affirming The Right Of The Workers At University Bookstore To Organize

WHEREAS, the right to organize is recognized as a human right, codified in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of which the United States is a signatory; and

WHEREAS, the ASUW is itself a union of students, and as such has supported the right of other groups to organize themselves, most recently during the organizing drive by academic student employees forming GSEAC-UAW; and

WHEREAS, workers at University Bookstore are organizing themselves into a union; and

WHEREAS, the University Bookstore is historically tied to the ASUW, having once been operated by the ASUW, with continuing ASUW voting membership on the UBS Board of Directors;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, the ASUW supports the right of UBS workers to organize; and

THAT, the ASUW calls on all people, including the Board of Directors and management of University Bookstore, to not interfere with the organizing drive of the UBS workers, and to recognize the chosen collective bargaining unit of the UBS workers.
