A Resolution To Increase Student Input In To UWPD Decision Making

WHEREAS community confidence in UWPDâs restraint, fairness, and respect for the community is an important component of improving campus climate, which may be of particular concern for students of color, sexual minorities, and other minority students, and

WHEREAS the UW campus is an important public forum for political speech and activism, and

WHEREAS UWPD policies can chill confidence in the safety of campus activism, and

WHEREAS inadequate diversity training within the UWPD has already been identified as an area of community concern, and

WHEREAS the armament level of the UWPD is a decision that requires community consultation, and

WHEREAS students have expressed a desire to limit the level of UWPD armament,

WHEREAS GPSS has passed a companion resolution to this resolution on November 8, 2000.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT ASUW urges the UWPD to increase the level of student input into departmental decision making by increasing the scope of the duties and powers of the Campus Security Advisory Committee (CSAC), and

THAT ASUW urges the UWPD to engage in regular diversity training and to conduct regular community forums to address community concerns, and

THAT ASUW urges the UWPD to work with the CSAC to develop a policy on weapons acquisition and use this policy to provide a safe campus environment with the lowest level of armament possible as defined by UWPD.
