A Resolution Commending Student Leaders and Alumni on the Medal of Honor Memorial

WHEREAS on January 11th, 2006, Andrew P.D.G. Everett introduced R-12-18 “A Resolution to Calling for a Tribute for Col. “Pappy” Boyington, USMC”, and;

WHEREAS R-12-18 inspired intense discussion, debate, and considerable media coverage, and;

WHEREAS R-12-18 did not pass, yet initiated discussion that produced R-12-22 a “Resolution in Support of Filipino Veterans Equity” and R-12-23 “A Resolution to Honor Gordon Hirabayashi,” which recognized minority groups’ contributions to our nation through military and civil rights efforts, and;

WHEREAS based on Senate debate regarding R-12-18, Andrew P.D.G. Everett filed resolution R-12-26, “A Resolution Calling a Memorial for UW Alumni awarded the Medal of Honor,” to honor all University of Washington Alumni awarded the Medal of Honor, past and present, with a memorial on campus, and;

WHEREAS the comments, critiques, and debate on the legislation have materialized into the Medal of Honor Memorial honoring University of Washington Alumni at the south end of Memorial Way, and;

WHEREAS the legislation has brought attention and honor to the eight UW alumni who were Medal of Honor recipients, and;

WHEREAS the project was begun and seen through to fruition by ASUW Senators, Employees, and Volunteers, and;

WHEREAS the Medal of Honor Memorial is a great achievement commending courageous UW alumni, therefore;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the ASUW commends the Senators, Employees, Volunteers, and University of Washington Faculty and Staff who engaged in debate, wrote legislation, were members of the Medal of Honor Taskforce, and assisted in the creation of the Medal of Honor Memorial and thus affirmed the power of the student voice.
