Associated Students of the University of Washington
Student Senate
Session 16

A Resolution in Support of a Quarterly Safety Week

WHEREAS the University of Washington and the UW Police Department make it a priority to, “partner with and educate the community to deter, reduce and solve crimes, and to resolve issues through modern policing” by “pursuing innovation through the responsible use of current technology” [1]; and,

WHEREAS crime in the South Campus area of the university has been a major deterrent for students housed in the residence halls to go outside at all hours of the day [6]; and,

WHEREAS many student-caused errors that result in crime, such as inadequate knowledge of surroundings, safety resources, and defense mechanisms, could be avoided if more emphasis was placed on safety education; and,

WHEREAS this upcoming budget year will undoubtedly prove tough for the UWPD to increase patrols, an effort to maintain and use current resources more efficiently must be stressed to preserve student safety; therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the University of Washington continue to focus on crime-preventive education through holding self-defense seminars, instituting quarterly safety weeks in partner with the ASUW, engaging and enlightening freshmen through First Year Programs, and incorporating safety measures into academic curricula; and,

THAT this legislation be forwarded to the UW Chief of Police John Vinson, UW President Mark Emmert, UW Vice Provost of Undergraduate Academic Affairs Ed Taylor, UW Provost Phyllis Wise, and SPD Interim Chief of Police John Diaz, UW Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Life Eric Godfrey, ASUW Community Relations Director Tunny Vann, and the Incoming ASUW Community Relations Director Yong Cho
