Thank you President Emmert

WHEREAS Dr. Mark Emmert has served as the President of the University of Washington for 6 years, and has now accepted an offer to become the President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association; and

WHEREAS President Emmert’s creation of the Husky Promise program enabled thousands of students to earn a UW education who otherwise would have been unable to afford it; and

WHEREAS President Emmert’s ability to give the UW a human face led to the most successful private fundraising drive in UW history, with the Campaign UW: Creating Futures campaign bringing in $2.68 billion to support the UW; and

WHEREAS President Emmert’s skill in management and passion for discovery have been key to building a community at the UW that is competitive in attracting top students and scholars from around the world and brings in more federal funding than any other public university in the country; and

WHEREAS President Emmert has helped the UW become a global university, with actions such as the creation of the Office of Global Affairs and the opening of a UW office in Beijing; and

WHEREAS President Emmert has consistently encouraged and supported the creation of visionary programs that deal with pressing contemporary issues, such as the Department of Global Health, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and the College of the Environment; and

WHEREAS President Emmert has overseen the expansion of the UW Bothell and UW Tacoma to 4-year baccalaureate-granting campuses; and

WHEREAS President Emmert has positioned the UW to become a leader in the study and practice of environmental sustainability through efforts such as creating the Climate Action Plan and organizing the College of the Environment; and

WHEREAS President Emmert hired Coach Steve Sarkisian; and

WHEREAS the distinction President Emmert has earned as an alumnus of the University of Washington is a rightful source of pride for all Huskies; and

WHEREAS President Emmert has made himself regularly available to ASUW leadership and the student senate; and

WHEREAS these statements list only some of President Emmert’s accomplishments during his tenure as the President of the University of Washington; and

WHEREAS President Emmert will be sorely missed; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the ASUW thanks President Emmert for his impactful service over the last six years, and

THAT a copy of this resolution be forwarded to our fellow Husky, Dr. Mark Emmert, along with best wishes for him and DeLaine for this next stage in their lives.
