A Resolution in Support of Collaborative Learning

WHEREAS on average students involved in collaborative learning and study groups perform better academically (1); and,

WHEREAS budget cuts to the university have hurt the quality of education in many ways, including through the reduction of study center hours and T.A. positions at the University of Washington; and,

WHEREAS the effective promotion and facilitation of study groups is a low cost way of increasing the quality of education; and,

WHEREAS properly facilitated study groups naturally foster friendships while promoting a welcoming classroom environment, thus allowing for a better academic community and college experience (2); and,

WHEREAS a pilot program instituting this method across campus is being created in partnership with Professor Mary Pat Wenderoth, the College of the Arts of Sciences, Faculty Senate, and UW Technology; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the ASUW supports instituting a method of campus wide student study group collaborative learning via an online program that makes it easy for students to find classmates to study with based on times available and interests; and,

THAT partnership with Professor Mary Pat Wenderoth in educating faculty on how to utilize study groups & collaborative learning will be included, the College of the Arts of Sciences in providing interested faculty that would pilot the program, UW Technology in supporting an online tool; and,

THAT the ASUW encourages UW faculty in supporting the use of collaborative learning and student study groups; and,

THAT the ASUW Director of Faculty and Administrative Affairs help the administration to maintain this collaborative learning program as needed; and,

THAT a copy of this resolution be sent to Board of Regents Chair Herb Simon, Faculty Senate Chair Bruce Ballick , President Emmert, Provost Phyllis Wise, Faculty Council Chair Mary Pat Wenderoth, and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences Ana Mari Cauce.
