A Resolution in Support of a Co-Curricular Activities Transcript WHEREAS the students who participate in activities outside the academic curriculum at the University of Washington do so voluntarily in an effort to positively distinguish themselves from the general student body; and WHEREAS students choosing to participate in these activities, approved by the University of Washington, give many hours of their time and a countless amount of their energy; and WHEREAS the “Diversity” section of the 2010 ASUW Legislative Agenda reads “The ASUW supports a holistic approach to university admissions and believes that learning from those who have diverse experiences, beliefs, and perspectives is an essential component of a quality education,” which by definition includes but is not limited to extra-curricular activities, research projects, volunteer service work, and internships; and WHEREAS in an ever-competitive post-secondary education job market, such an item can also be used as a professional resume supplement; and WHEREAS while the academic transcript officially documents the performance of students in class, those hardworking few who choose to further enrich their learning experience through extra-curricular involvement currently have no means of officially documenting these activities or the time spent involved in these activities; and WHEREAS the University of Washington Undergraduate Admissions Office already accepts extracurricular documentation from colleges and universities nationwide as official, supplemental transcripts in the undergraduate admission application process; and WHEREAS the University of Washington Office of Information Management is already working on implementing “Kuali Student”[1], a next-generation information system that provides self-serving web functionality, including modules of admissions and enrollment, program audits and evaluations, financial aid summaries, course descriptions and scheduling, etc. to substantially improve the educational quality and ease of access for UW students; and WHEREAS Kuali Student is a collaborative development of top tier institutions that includes the University of British Columbia, University of California (Berkeley), University of Maryland (College Park), University of Washington, Florida State University, University of Southern California, San Joaquin Delta College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, and Carnegie Mellon University, which provide significant commitment in funding and/or resources to Kuali Student; and WHEREAS Kuali Student will also include an online module that allows students to officially document their co-curricular activities; and WHEREAS the existing student administrative system for the University of Washington is a 26-year-old legacy mainframe application that is inflexible and does not collect the information critical to effective operations and decision making for students; therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT the ASUW supports the creation of a co-curricular activities transcript made possible through the Kuali Student information system for students who selflessly give of their time and energy for the betterment of the University of Washington; and THAT the ASUW supports this document as being recognized an official University of Washington document, just as the official academic transcript; and THAT the ASUW supports the ability of the Kuali Student information system to document these activities which take place outside of the classroom just as the activities inside the classroom are officially documented; and THAT the ASUW supports the idea that not all learning and student enrichment done at the University of Washington happens within the classroom; and THAT the ASUW wishes to work with the administration in an effort to ensure that such a document, already in place at a growing number of colleges and universities nationwide, can be created for the students of the University of Washington in a timely manner; and THAT the ASUW supports this document being available to students on a retroactive basis in order to record past involvement before the creation of the document, and; THAT a copy of this Resolution be sent to University of Washington President Mark Emmert, Provost Phyllis Wise, Vice-Provost of Student Life Eric Godfrey, Director of Admissions Phillip Ballinger, and Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs Debbie Wiegand.
