A resolution to adopt the Husky Creed

WHEREAS the adoption of the Husky Creed will strengthen the UW Community of learners by providing a model of expectations for what it means to be a part of our University and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed is different than the Student Conduct Code in that its purpose is to build community and not set restrictions and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed will promote civility and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed provides members of our community opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed tells us in an affirmative way how we should behave in the academic community as well as how we should treat others and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed will foster a sense of community within the University by supporting campus traditions and celebrations and;

WHEREAS the creed is a statement of principles to help students understand the obligations of being a member of the campus community and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed promotes the success of academic and organizational clubs by providing opportunities to enhance students’ academic and social integration into the University and;

WHEREAS the Husky Creed creates opportunities for students to demonstrate how they uphold the vision and values of the University and;

WHEREAS peer institutions have adopted similar creeds/statements to guide student life and;

WHEREAS a group of students, student leaders, faculty, and staff have been collaborating on this project since 2007.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the following statement be adopted as the Husky Creed

The values upheld at the University of Washington serve as the foundation for our excellence in higher education. As a member of the UW community I will:

o Practice high standards of honesty and integrity.

o Respect the dignity and rights of all persons.

o Protect freedom of thought and expression.

o Pursue ongoing intellectual and personal development

o Engage in critical thinking and discovery

o Improve our university community, Northwest region and world.

THAT the Board of Directors creates a task force to see that the creed is integrated across our University.

THAT the Director of Community Relations chair the task force created by the Board of Directors.
