A Resolution Enlisting The Support of Orin Smith in the Advancement of Student Concerns WHEREAS the University of Washington Board of Regents have full control of the University and its property as prescribed by RCW 28B.20.130 [1]; and, WHEREAS the Board of Regents are held to a higher degree of accountability because of this authority; and, WHEREAS the ASUW is a student government whose main objective is to serve the students and meet their diverse array of needs [2]; and, WHEREAS Orin Smith’s visit to the ASUW Student Senate was the most recent time a regent other than the Student Regent was made available for students to directly relay concerns and ask questions; therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT with a positive and transparent relationship between the Board of Regents and the ASUW, these concerns can be properly and effectively addressed to maintain the welfare of the university; and, THAT Orin Smith’s visit to the ASUW Student Senate was a positive and useful experience; and THAT the ASUW encourages the UW Board of Regents to send a regent other than the Student Regent to hold a quarterly forum of at least 15 minutes, including question and answer, of or concerning the University, with the ASUW Student Senate starting the new academic quarter immediately following the passage of this resolution; and, THAT, the ASUW Student Senate continue passing resolutions establishing student concerns to formulate the discussion between the administration and the student body; and, THAT the Board of Regents’ commitment to the call of the ASUW would verify its position in serving the best interest of the University of Washington; and, THAT this resolution be forwarded to Orin Smith, Stanley H. Barer, Kristianne Blake, Jeffrey H. Brotman, Craig W. Cole, William H. Gates, Ben Golden, Joanne R. Harrell, Sally Jewell, Herb Simon, President Mark Emmert, UW Provost Phyllis Wise, and Governor Chris Gregoire.
