Associated Students of the University of Washington
Student Senate
Session 15

A Resolution to provide students with sufficient short term parking at the University of Washington

WHEREAS, very few of the 11,500 total parking spaces available on the Seattle campus are currently available for short term parking, and those that are available are inconvenient for most students; and

WHEREAS, short term parking would be an incredible benefit to students and increase the functionality of our current campus; and

WHEREAS, organizations on campus that factor into student life on the Seattle campus currently have nowhere to park for loading and unloading purposes; and

WHEREAS, all students who wish to park for a short term period must first pay $12.00 upfront in cash before returning to a gate house for a partial reimbursement; and

WHEREAS, of the approximately 30,000 commuters to the Seattle campus many find a need at one point to park for several minutes in order to return rentals or turn in assignments.

WHEREAS, it would be most beneficial for the members of the University to have short term parking spots available to use without having to provide a cash payment upfront of which only a partial refund is provided; and

WHEREAS, having less than 30 minutes maximum parking spots available to members of the University would provide adequate time for students to utilize their availability for returning organizations rentals or dropping off assignments; and

WHEREAS, having less than 30 minutes maximum parking spaces available will also cut down on unnecessary traffic at the gatehouses, provide appropriate resources for students, as well as eliminate the inconvenience to both parking services as well as commuters; and

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, ASUW recommends that several of the current parking spots in centrally located parking lots be converted to metered spaces of less than 30 minutes maximum parking; and

THAT, the ASUW supports productive changes to the Seattle campus that will better student life as provided by this resolution; and

THAT, the ASUW believes that the functionality of campus parking will greatly increase with minimal effect to parking services; and

THAT, a copy of this resolution be sent to the University of Washington Director of Transportation Services, Josh Kavanagh upon passage.
