Session 15

Resolution for Advocacy

WHEREAS it is long-standing ASUW opinion that the best form of financial aid is lower tuition; And

WHEREAS the ASUW recognizes the financial burden that is being placed upon Washington state education as well as social services; And

WHEREAS it is established common reasoning that University graduates will provide much of the economic structure as well as stability needed to support the community’s social services; And

WHEREAS the proposed 13% financial cut between the fiscal period of 2009-2011 would result in $116 million loss, which will have direct as well as indirect effects on the quality and resources available for a University of Washington education on students; And

WHEREAS removal of the 7% cap (as suggested by elected officials) on annual tuition swells is being discussed to supplement the financial restraints felt by the University of Washington; And

WHEREAS a 7% increase in tuition is nearly double the current inflation rate; And

WHEREAS tuition has increased by 25% in the past 4 years and has doubled in the past decade despite the 7% tuition cap;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT the ASUW recognizes the financial burden it must take on as an establishment with the current economic pressure. However, the ASUW is also aware of the systemic problems that would arise as a result of raising tuition more then the current cap of 7%. ASUW encourages 7% as the ceiling of personal burden placed upon University of Washington students, families, and the local university community; And

THAT the ASUW supports as well as advocates on behalf of all the University community that the 7% cap for tuition will remain in place to prevent misallocation of financial resources. Where student tuition will not be used or used in place to supplement university of Washington budget plans; And

THAT the increase in tuition cost is used as the final source of income for the University after all other necessary measures are taken. Thus, in effort to provide educational opportunities for all academics based on intellectual ability and not on personal affluence. Thus, providing our community and state of Washington with the ingenuity to drive and promote a successful advancing economy; And

THAT upon passing of this resolution a copy is sent to President Mark A. Emmert; And

THAT upon passing of this resolution a copy is sent to the elected officials in Olympia asking for them to advocate on the behalf of students and well as thanking them for doing so.
