Session 15

A Resolution in Support of the Co-Curricular Activities Transcript

WHEREAS, the students who participate in activities outside the academic curriculum at the University of Washington voluntarily choose to do so in an effort to positively distinguish themselves from the general student body;

WHEREAS, students choosing to participate in these activities, approved by the University of Washington, give many hours of their time and countless amounts of their energy;

WHEREAS, in the “Maintaining and Expanding Diversity” section of the 2008 ASUW Legislative Agenda it reads “We support the use of a holistic admissions policy that evaluates any and all relevant information about an applicant”, which by definition includes extra-curricular activities;

WHEREAS, the term “admissions policy” also refers to admission into Majors Programs as well as admission into Post-Graduate Education;

WHEREAS, in an ever-competitive Post-Secondary Education job market, such an item can also be used as a Professional Resume supplement;

WHEREAS, the Academic Transcript already officially documents the performance of students in class, these hardworking few who choose to further enrich their learning experience through extra-curricular involvement currently have no means of officially documenting these activities or the time spent involved in these activities;

WHEREAS, the University of Washington Undergraduate Admissions Office already accepts documents of the like from colleges and universities nationwide as official, supplemental transcripts in the Undergraduate Admission Application process; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, the ASUW supports the creation of the Co-Curricular Activities Transcript for students who give of their time and energy for the betterment of the University of Washington;

THAT, the ASUW supports this document as being recognized an official University of Washington document, the same as the Official Academic Transcript;

THAT, the ASUW supports the ability to document these activities which take place outside of the classroom just as the activities inside the classroom are documented;

THAT, the ASUW supports the idea that not all learning and student enrichment done at the University of Washington happens within the classroom;

THAT, the ASUW supports these students who selflessly give of their time and energy;

THAT, the ASUW work with the administration in an effort to ensure that such a document, already in place at a growing number of colleges and universities nationwide, can be created for the students of the University of Washington in a timely manner;

That, the ASUW supports, if created, this document being available to students on a retroactive basis in order to document past involvement before the creation of the document.

THAT, a copy of this Resolution be sent to University of Washington President Mark Emmert, Provost Phyllis Wise, Vice-Provost of Student Life Eric Godfrey, and Director of Admissions Phillip Ballinger.
