A Resolution in Support of Extending International Baccalaureate Credit Policy WHEREAS, according to University of Washington official International Baccalaureate credit policies, “The UW encourages and applauds students who have chosen International Baccalaureate (IB) courses as part of their high school curriculum. These courses are challenging and demanding, and we believe they provide excellent preparation for university study,” ( WHEREAS, students who participate in these courses choose to further their education beyond the standard level of high school course work, and; WHEREAS, students entering the University of Washington having completed International Baccalaureate courses and tests are exceedingly well prepared for standard undergraduate course work, and; WHEREAS, students in the International Baccalaureate program take a variety of tests, including Standard Level exams that are largely equivalent to their Advanced Placement (AP) counterparts, and; WHEREAS, students participating in Advanced Placement receive up to 10 credits for exams based on a one year course, and; WHEREAS, students who complete and test in one-year long Standard Level courses receive no credit for these courses, and a maximum of 10 credits for a continuous two-year course, therefore; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON: THAT, the ASUW supports the reevaluation of International Baccalaureate credit policy in favor of extending credit to Standard Level International Baccalaureate courses, and; THAT, the credit given to Standard Level courses should be comparable to credits granted for similar Advanced Placement test scores, and; THAT, the ASUW supports the recognition of these IB tests scores for placement out of certain undergraduate prerequisite courses, and; THAT, a copy of this Resolution be sent to University of Washington President Mark Emmert, Provost Phyllis Wise, Vice-Provost of Undergraduate Academic Affairs Ed Taylor, and Director of Admissions Philip Ballinger.
