A Resolution Requesting that Rep. Thomas P. Lantos be named UW Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus

WHEREAS the Honorable Thomas Peter Lantos, Ph.D., Member of the House of Representatives from the State of California, the only survivor of the Shoah to serve in the US Congress and is a graduate of the University of Washington, who came to UW on an academic scholarship in 1947, was awarded a BA in Economics in 1949, and an MA in Economics in 1950, and he took a Ph.D from the University of California - Berkeley, also in Economics, in 1953, and,

WHEREAS from the time of taking his Ph.D to his election to the US House of Representatives in 1980, he was a professor of economics, an international affairs analyst for public television, and a consultant to a number of businesses as well as served in senior advisory roles to members of the United States Senate, and,

WHEREAS Rep. Lantos was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-Seventh and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-present) and is currently Chairman of Committee on Foreign Affairs (One Hundred Tenth Congress), and,

WHEREAS before he immigrated to the United States, he was a resistance fighter in his native Hungary against the Nazi invaders during the Second World War, and,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT we acknowledge that Rep. Lantos has over the course of his life needed to persevere against the absolute worst of what humanity has to offer, and has triumphed in the face of that adversity,

THAT we support the Honorable Thomas Peter Lantos, Ph.D., Representative from the State of California, as an excellent candidate for the 2008 Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus (more popularly called alumnus of the year).
