A Resolution Concerning the Northern Illinois University Tragedy

WHEREAS, On February 14, 2008, a gunman shot 21 students and killed six people before killing himself at Northern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, This tragedy occurred in a lecture hall full of students; and

WHEREAS, As of February 15, 2008, the gunman was identified as a former graduate student who had not taken proper medication prior to this tragedy; and

WHEREAS, On our own University of Washington campus, Rebecca Jane Griego was killed by a gunman on April 2, 2007; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:

THAT, the ASUW sends sincere condolences to the Northern Illinois University community; and

THAT, the ASUW Student Senate observes a moment of silence immediately after passage of this resolution; and

THAT, the ASUW recognizes that the issues of campus safety and mental health care are closely related, and thus continue to lobby for improved mental health care on campus; and

THAT, the ASUW will continue to lobby, both locally and nationally, to create a safe learning environment on university campuses; and

THAT, A copy of this resolution be sent to the Northern Illinois University student government representatives.
