In Support of the Flag Salute

WHEREAS in most formal proceedings where legislation is discussed there is an established traditional process; and

WHEREAS legislative bodies pay respect to their foundation; and

WHEREAS the University of Washington was founded by the State of Washington which is a part of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS one of our fundamental freedoms is the freedom to assemble peaceably, a freedom that has led to the organization of deliberative bodies such as the ASUW Student Senate; and

WHEREAS the Student Senate wishes to show its respects to its origins; and

WHEREAS a recitation of the "Pledge of Allegiance" pays respect to our Union;

BE IT ENACTED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON STUDENT SENATE:

THAT the Student Senate shall say the "Pledge of Allegiance" at the beginning of every meeting; and

THAT the Student Senate Rules Section 1. Organization of the Meeting, A. Standard Agenda be amended to add Flag Salute after Call of Order; and

THAT all those present who wish not to take part in the flag salute shall not be required to; and

THAT a current United States flag be present for the pledge
